Musmula, medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a plant species in the family Rosaceae, the fruit of which is cultivated in the Caspian Sea region of northern Iran, from 3000 years ago in North Western and Caucasus, Transcaucus and North Eastern to southeastern Asia and South Origin of Eastern Europe.

 

Musmula is a large shrubby or small deciduous tree, which is cultivated for its reddish brown fruits and is also cultivated as an ornamental plant.

 

It is also known as Musmula, Medlar, Common Medlar, Medlar Tree, Nephelier, Deutsche, Mispelbaum, Mispel, Nispero Komun, Nesperara, Nispero Europopo and Mispel.

 

Musmula require a temperate climate and prefer well-drained and slightly acidic soils. The lifespan of a Musmula tree lasts at least 30 to 50 years. Musmula fruit is consumed after betel leaf.

Musmula is a large shrubby or small deciduous tree that can grow up to 8 meters high. Leaves are dark green, large, simple, elliptic to elliptical; 8–15 cm long; Base cuneate 3-4 cm wide, margin complete and pubescent. The bark is brown in color.

The tree flowers during late spring or early summer. The flowers are solitary, white; 3-5 cm with 5 cm and five petals which is 6 cm (2.4 in) wide. Fruits are globose to sub-globular domes that are red to brown in color; 3-4 cm (-6 cm) in diameter and 2-3 cm (0.79–1.18 in) in diameter.

 

The branches of the Musmula are clumpy and brittle. The fruit weighs about 15 grams. The pulp or flesh inside the fruit has a rough skin texture.
